Our mild, Mediterranean climate means a lot of pests are active year-round rather than dying off in winter like they would in colder areas. Here’s what homeowners commonly deal with:
Rodents are probably the biggest issue. Roof rats, Norway rats, and mice love the mild climate and are active year-round. They’re especially problematic in older homes and areas near the coast or with lots of vegetation.
Ants are everywhere. Argentine ants are common and love to invade kitchens looking for food and water. You’ll also see odorous house ants and occasionally carpenter ants, especially if you have moisture issues or wood damage.
Spiders are pretty typical too. Black widows are around (they like garages, woodpiles, and dark corners), plus you’ll see common house spiders, cellar spiders, and the occasional wolf spider.
Gophers and moles can wreak havoc on yards and gardens. The coastal soil is perfect for them, and they’ll tear up lawns pretty quickly.
Termites are definitely a concern, particularly drywood termites in coastal areas. The moisture from the marine layer creates good conditions for them.
Wasps and yellowjackets show up in warmer months and can build nests around eaves, attics, and outdoor structures.
Fleas and ticks are common if you have pets or wildlife passing through your yard, especially in areas with brush or tall grass.
Bed bugs are definitely a thing in Monterey, though they’re not as tied to the local climate or geography like some other pests. Bed bugs are pretty much everywhere these days. Monterey gets a fair amount of tourists visiting for the aquarium, Cannery Row, Pebble Beach, and all the beautiful coastal spots, which means more people traveling through hotels, vacation rentals, and Airbnbs. That travel activity can definitely contribute to bed bug issues since they hitchhike in luggage and clothing.
Hotels and vacation rentals are common spots, but they can also end up in homes, apartments, dorm rooms, and even offices or movie theaters. Basically anywhere people spend time sitting or sleeping.
Bed bugs are treatable, but you do need a professional pest control company to handle them properly. DIY treatments usually don’t cut it because bed bugs are sneaky and resistant to a lot of over-the-counter products.
